It’s the last day of a summer season that was full of paint, glitter and tissue paper creations. For twelve weeks, kids staying at RMHSNJ were able to mark their calendars with dates for trips and crafts amid scheduled hospital visits and surgeries. Our camp counselors (interns from Cooper Medical School’s P.U.L.S.E. program) hosted activities every afternoon and chaperoned field trips to All Fired Up!, Independence Hall, Crystal Lake Pool, Pinsetters Bowling, Camden’s Children Garden, Adventure Aquarium, Rutgers-Camden Gordon Theatre, Chuck E. Cheese, and the movies. Our weekly volunteer drivers put on their Camp hats and made sure our kids got to where they needed to go every week!
Thanks to the Canuso Foundation’s generous gift to support our summer camp program, our families enjoyed lunch on every trip and a Xmas in July party that brought Ronald McDonald and Santa Claus together for one very memorable afternoon. Throughout the whole season, the South Jersey community filled us with awe and gratitude as they dropped off snacks, craft supplies and gifts for our Christmas party. Every single item made it possible for us to serve patients from Kuwait, Peru, Colombia, China, South Korea, Amsterdam, Canada, Indonesia, Haiti and twenty states.
Our campers laughed. They ran and wheeled through the sprinklers on sunny days. They ate s’mores, ice cream, popsicles and lots of goldfish crackers. Our children got to experience the magic of summer – the lightheartedness that comes when you spend your day laughing and singing while creating just for the sake of making something new – in the comfort of their home-away-from-home. For twelve weeks, our camp counselors and volunteers worked tirelessly to make sure our kids were smiling from ear to ear as they took in the sights and sounds of the season. Popsicle stick butterflies, paper hot air balloons, and handmade dream catchers remain as proof that this summer, our Camp Happy Heart campers squeezed the goodness out of every day, down to the last glittering drop.
